Bring their imagination to life, scarily bad baking, and growing together

Three for Thursday from The Parent’s Play Book

Quick win

Bring their imagination to life
~5 mins

Children have the most incredible imaginations – and now you can bring their ideas to life in seconds.

Using ChatGPT (or another AI tool), you can turn anything your child dreams up into a picture they will love.

How to try it:

  • Ask your child what picture they would like to create.
  • Drill down into the details by asking questions about colours, locations, anything that makes it unique.
  • Type their idea into ChatGPT – or, for older children, let them write their own prompts (doubles as a fun creativity and writing activity).

✨ And just like that, their wildest dreams appear on the screen in front of you.

After school activity

Scarily bad baking
~20-30 mins (+cooking time)

Baking is something many parents enjoy doing with their children – even if it can get a little (or a lot) chaotic at times. Halloween is the perfect excuse to test your Great British Bake Off skills and create a spooky showstopper of your own.

For us, this consisted of turning a banana loaf green. I’m not sure many shows will be stopped as a result, but we all have to start somewhere.

Weekend project

Grow together
~1 hr

Planting daffodil and tulip bulbs in autumn is a simple, rewarding project to do with kids – it’s tricky to get wrong and provides some very satisfying flowers to let you know when spring has arrived.

How to try it:

  • Get some tulip and / or daffodil bulbs.
  • Plant them following the instructions on the bag (usually ~10-15cm deep, 10cm apart), either in deep pots or directly in the garden.
  • Wait until spring for your children to proudly claim all the credit (even if they mostly supervised).
